Remember all those pics of “poutine” I’ve been posting over the past couple weeks?
I’ve had a few folks ask me what Poutine is and why I’m such a freak about it.
Please excuse the very crude diagram, but Poutine (in it’s most basic form) is three simple ingredients:
- French Fries
- Mushroom Gravy
- Cheese Curds
Invented in Canada by the Royal Canadian Gastronomy Research Team (RCGRT), Poutine is a staple in the Canadian diet and is also incredibly delicious.
Macro nutrition and taste aside, what makes Poutine so amazing is how extensible it is!
Every single type of cuisine has a variation of the basic three ingredients, allowing for an infinite number of Poutine Permutations! Here are some of my favourite examples:
- Indian Poutine: Sweet Potato Fries + Chicken Tikki Masala Curry + Paneer
- American Poutine: Steak Fries + Beef Chili + Cheddar Cheese
- French Poutine: Thin Frites + Beef Burgundy + Crème Fraîche
The possibilities are truely endless. I have been trying to concoct a Filipino Poutine using my new style of chicken adobo, and the preliminary results are very promising. I just need a better way to make the fries.
If you EVER have a chance to try poutine, THEN EAT IT. It’s a life changing food. I remember my first bite and the subsequent taste-bud high that followed. Nothing compares.
Nothing.
I try and explain this to some people and they still look at me like I’m trying to feed them topsoil. All the elements are delicious by themselves, but they are greater than the sum of their parts when combined. It’s not difficult; it’s delicious.
